What Happens to Trackers and Telematics When Selling Vans?
Telematics units, GPS trackers, dashcams and connected fuel cards should be removed, deactivated or wiped before a van leaves your business — they are your equipment and your data, not the vehicle's, and leaving them active is both a cost and a data-protection risk. This is quick to do and should happen before collection, not after.
Why it matters
An active telematics unit or dashcam left in a sold van can keep transmitting location and driving data to your account, which is both a privacy issue and an easy oversight to miss on a busy disposal. It also means you keep paying for a subscription on a vehicle you no longer own.
What to do before the vehicle is collected
Work through this per vehicle, ideally as part of the same checklist as removing fuel cards and access fobs.
- Deactivate or transfer the telematics subscription with your provider
- Physically remove hard-wired trackers if they are your property, not the vehicle's
- Remove dashcams, SD cards and any stored footage
- Cancel or reassign fuel cards, toll tags and congestion charge accounts
- Wipe any sat-nav or infotainment system with stored addresses or paired phones
If a unit is hard-wired or hard to access
Some telematics units are integrated into the vehicle's wiring and awkward to remove without specialist time. If removal isn't practical before collection, at minimum deactivate the subscription with your provider so it stops transmitting and billing once the vehicle changes hands.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you remove telematics units for us?
We flag it at collection, but removal and subscription cancellation is best handled by you beforehand since it's your account and equipment.
What if we forget and a unit is still active after sale?
Deactivate the subscription with your provider as soon as it's noticed — most can be switched off remotely.
Does a fitted tracker affect the sale price?
Not if it's removed or clearly noted as not included; leaving an unaddressed live unit in place is best avoided rather than priced in.
Should dashcam footage be wiped?
Yes — remove the SD card and any driver or route data before the vehicle leaves your site.
